On the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description of the damped linear harmonic oscillator

Using the modified PrelleSinger approach, we point out that explicit time independent first integrals can be identified for the damped linear harmonic oscillator in different parameter regimes. Using these constants of motion, an appropriate Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism is developed and the resultant canonical equations are shown to lead to the standard dynamical description. Suitable canonical transformations to standard Hamiltonian forms are also obtained. It is also shown that a possible quantum mechanical description can be developed either in the coordinate or momentum representations using the Hamiltonian forms.

Nonstandard conserved Hamiltonian structures in dissipative/damped systems : Nonlinear generalizations of damped harmonic oscillator
Abstract. In this paper we point out the existence of a remarkable nonlocal transformation between the damped harmonic oscillator and a modified Emden type nonlinear oscillator equation with linear forcing, ẍ+αxẋ+βx+γx = 0,which preserves the form of the time independent integral, conservative Hamiltonian and the equation of motion. Generalizing this transformation we prove the existence of non...

We determine local Hamiltonians, Poisson structures and conserved measures for the linear ows on < 2 . We study ows around critical points as deformations of the harmonic oscillator (HO) and the free particle. In particular the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) is Hamiltonian with respect to non-standard Poisson structures for all non-zero values of the damping constant. Treating the DHO as a de...

Quantization of a damped harmonic oscillator leads to so called Bateman’s dual system. The corresponding Bateman’s Hamiltonian, being a self-adjoint operator, displays the discrete family of complex eigenvalues. We show that they correspond to the poles of energy eigenvectors and the corresponding resolvent operator when continued to the complex energy plane. Therefore, the corresponding genera...
متن کاملA Damped Oscillator as a Hamiltonian System
1 Problem It is generally considered that systems with friction are not part of Hamiltonian dynamics, but this is not always the case. Show that a (nonrelativistic) damped harmonic oscillator can be described by a Hamiltonian (and by a Lagrangian), with the implication that Liouville's theorem applies here. Consider motion in coordinate x of a particle of mass m with equation of motion, m¨x + β...

In this paper we study to what extent the canonical equivalence and the identity of the geometric phases of dissipative and conservative linear oscillators, established in a preceeding paper, can be generalized to nonlinear ones. Considering first the 1-D quartic generalized oscillator we determine, by means of a perturbative time dependent technic of reduction to normal forms, the canonical tr...
